5 Tips to Hook Your Readers with Long Copy (and keep 'em reading all the way to the end)
Like most solo professionals, you can't afford to sell yourself with hype. You want to create a friendly conversation with website visitors so you'll attract clients.
But a website that doesn't attract and hold attention tends to grow cobwebs. It looks sleepy!
And research shows, over and over, that long copy sells better than short copy.
So how you do create long messages that don't set your visitors to snoozing... or worse, clicking off to a more wide-awake website?
1. Write conversationally.
Lets face it: web surfers get bored like everybody else. Theyre sitting all alone with their computers and they want to feel somebody cares enough to talk to them. Reading pages and pages of copy should feel like getting a letter from a good friend.
Short copy (and short-short ezines) comes across more like a message left on an answering machine not a meaningful connection.
Ever had a phone conversation with a friend or even a business relationship when you just enjoyed talking?
You were in no hurry to hang up. You were entertained. You felt affirmed. When readers feel this way, theyll stay tuned all the way to the bottom of the page.
2. Maintain suspense.
Whether you're writing website copy or murder mysteries (my favorite leisure reading), maintain suspense. Each sentence should motivate the reader to move to the next sentence...and the next paragraph...and the next page, chapter and even book.
Im not sure who first applied the term bucket brigade to copy. But heres the idea.
Before fire departments got organized, volunteers would fight fires by lining up and passing buckets of water from the nearest well to whatever was burning. Another line would pass empty buckets back for refills. Buckets moved from hand to hand fast, no stops.
So think of each idea as a bucket you want to pass along, from one sentence to the next. Motivate the reader: Keep going! Urgent! You need to reach the end before anything else happens!
3. Ask, Whos reading? rather than How long?
Your target market really wants to learn what you have to say. They realize theyll learn from you, even if youre overtly making a sales pitch. So they keep reading....and reading.
Whats your favorite personal interest? Dogs? Cats? Hiking? Basketball? Soccer? Music? Art? Real estate?
When youre passionate, you cant learn enough. You hope the article, book or talk will go on forever. And if youve targeted right, your readers will feel the same way.
4. Encourage your readers to talk back to you.
Marketing researchers know: When we read any message, we tend to talk back! Sometimes we speak aloud (and even throw a magazine across a room doesnt work with a computer).
But most often we engage in what psychologists call counter-arguments. For example, you read, This technique will transform your cat into an obedient pet who comes when called.
You think, No way! or, You must be kidding.
We also affirm what we read.
Thats a great idea! I can save money in the long run!
And (especially if were contemplating a big-ticket item) were seeking more and more reasons to justify our buying decision.
So...youre probably ahead of me: Longer copy means more opportunities to say, Yes its for me!
5. Crawl out on the edge.
What television shows become mega-hits? I should know. Im somewhat anti-television. No cable in my home because, There are better ways to spend my time!
But what do I rent at the video store? You got it: the big HBO and Showtime series that go outside the networking programming box.
Theyre more like indie films than television and they attract audiences of millions. And just try to rent a DVD of past seasons: you get on a waiting list. (Desperate Housewives? A desperate imitation! Feel free to email if you disagree.)
Writing works the same way.
Whenever I take a risk with an edgy ezine article, a few readers unsubscribe and some even send a few grumpy emails. But I always get a few orders and queries about coaching, too.
When I write reviews for amazon.com, I just say whats on my mind. And I get some of my best clients and subscribers.
One reader even said, Do they call you Cantankerous Cathy? You never say anything nice! But she signed up for my ezine and attended three teleclasses. At least half a dozen clients claim they hired me because, they said, You tell it like it is!
Edgy for me means strong opinions and ideas. Some famous copywriters use strong, colorful language. Adapt your edginess to your audience and your own style.
Bottom line: As long as you hook the reader, maintain suspense and tell a good story, your message can be as long as you want it to be.

Creative Writing and the Hero's Journey: Jarhead (2005) Deconstructed
From our deconstruction of hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters....

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.
The Hero's Journey:
a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.
b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.
c) Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.
and more...

How Can the Kids Help Around the House?
When my husband was in college, a number of his fellow students were bringing their dirty laundry home, and Mom was coming once a month to clean their room. This wasn't because they were lazy, but they simply didn't know how to do the laundry or house cleaning!
Don't let your children become like those students... Apart from the fact that teaching your children house and other chores prepare them for life on their own, they're also chores that you don't need to do! I know, I know, it takes time to teach them how to do it, and there will be quite a few times when you will need to finish the job behind them, but once they know, you will never need to do it again until they leave... And, at least until they reach eight or so, they will be proud to be entrusted with "big people" tasks.
So, what tasks can be safely delegated to your children? It depends on their age, but there are things they can do as early as 2 years old. Below is a list of tasks by age group:
Toddlers: Can dust with an electromagnetic cloth or baby wipe; Spray and scrub the sink and bathtub with water and a sponge; pick up toys or other floor clutter and put them in baskets or bins - if the baskets are labeled with pictures, they can even put the right toys in the right container! At this point, anything you give them to do except putting the toys away will be more to give them something to do while you are cleaning, but they will try to do their best if you take the time to teach them, and it will seem natural to them when they graduate to more complex tasks.
Preschoolers: Sweep with kid-size broom; spray and squeegee windows using lemon- or vinegar-water (inside windows only, please!); use a handheld vacuum; wipe sinks using baby wipes; empty a small trash basket into a bigger bag; scrub corners of kitchen chairs or other small spaces using a clean toothbrush or nail brush and a cup of water; make beds (preferably with a comforter, it's easier for them); fold towels; put clothes in drawers; hang clothes on hooks; put dirty clothes in hamper; help feed animals; wipe off baseboards, windowsills with small cloth or wearing old socks on their hands; help wipe up spills; dry unbreakable dishes; pick up litter in the yard.
Kindergartners: sweep small areas with a dustpan and broom; clean bathroom sinks; hang up the towel after a bath; store bath toys; help in the kitchen (stirring, tearing lettuce, etc. - no knife yet!); set the napkins and silverware on the table; clear dishes from the table (depends on your child, you know if they risk breaking them or not); help load the dishwasher; straighten plastic dishes in a cabinet; help straighten pots and pans; sort family members' clean laundry; dust furniture; strip linens from beds; straighten books on a bookshelf; put game and puzzle pieces in correct storage containers; use a lint remover to pick up pet hair on furniture; tidy up their room.
Younger Elementary School Kids: Make beds (any of them); take out garbage; sweep stairs and walks; clean the car and help wash it; vacuum their own room; sort and straighten toys; fold and put away laundry; empty the dishwasher; feed and care for pets; set and clean the table (but only with unbreakable dishes and cups at this point); sort clothes for washing.
Older Elementary School Kids: Clean bathroom mirrors; vacuum; clean toilets; clean countertops and the kitchen sink; mop small-area floors; use the washer and dryer; wash, dry and put away dishes; clean pet areas; clean cobwebs and dust in high places with a pole; sweep the garage; set and clean the table (by the end of elementary school, they usually are able to do it with regular dishes and glasses).
Teenagers: Can do everything you do, except for the most intensive jobs, or the ones using noxious products, such as deep-cleaning of the oven, or removing mold from the bathroom tiles.
So, when will you sit down and create a chore chart for your children? What chores will you assign to each, depending on their ages? What will you do with the time you are saving this way?

Soccer Player Tips for Better Performance
Soccer player's tips for a better performace. Tips and techniques to consider for the game of soccer.
Here are some ideas to consider when you are playing the game of soccer.
1. Keep the ball moving with one or two touches. This is also known as interpassing within a team setting.
2. Play the ball with pace; make a crisp solid pass, whether it is a 3-meter or 20 meter pass.
Yes and to your team mate.
3. Play the ball and move.
Playing and moving covers the basic idea behind making runs, but the important thing to remember is to make these runs dangerous and make runs that lead to goal scoring opportunities or open up space for a team-mate.
Get the ball and lay it off and then make that run behind the defender again, so your team mate can chip the ball to you over the opposing players.
4. Give it and get it back.
Give and go or wall pass.
The basics for all of soccer is the ability to pass accurately to force opportunities. The key is setting up your defender.
You almost need to draw in the defender towards you, as though he or she is going to be able to intercept the ball, then give it and go - accelerating into the open space to receive the return pass.
5. When dribbling change your pace after making a move to beat an opponent player .
Attack quickly when there's an advantage or an opportunity.
Try to keep the ball moving as quickly as possible. If there's a chance to break, then counter-attack with a few precise passes.
6. Keep the ball close to your feet when controlling the ball. Keep your head up and watch the field as everybody is moving.
7. When dribbling, try and touch the ball with every step you take. To ensure close control of the ball and then enhance your ability to cut the ball away from defenders.
8. Get the cross in. Try and aim for the area between the 6 and 18 yard boxes. This will make the goalkeeper come out and try and collect the ball.
This makes the goal open and vunerable. A cross directly infront of the goalkeeper is easy for the keeper to handle.
9. Take shots on goal and test the goalkeeper as often as possible in the first part of the game.
10. Always want the ball, and ask for it.
If you know that you are making great runs into space let your team know this.
This type of communication is vital for the development of great plays.
11. Always watch the ball, don't get caught because you were watching your opponents feet.
12. Always watch the movement of ALL players on the field.
13. Stick to your teams strategy and tactics for the day.
14. Show respect for yourself by respecting the officials, the coaches, the opposing team and your own team.

Fit The Fishing Rod To The Fishing Task
See yourself standing on the bank of a swiftly moving stream in the shade of a gnarled willow, your fishing rod bent beneath the weight of an unusually large catch.
Whether or not you land that fish depends on the decisions you made at the shop -- primarily the type of rod.
The ABCs Of Fishing Rods
Your rod is the most important tool you will use while fishing, and you can chose from a wide range of types, styles and lengths.
A fishing rod is a shaft of graphite, fiberglass, steel, wood or bamboo used to catch fish (duh). Fishing filament (line), is threaded through the ferrules (eyes) along the rod. The ferrule at the tip directs the cast. 1 end of the line winds around a reel at the base of the pole. The other end of the line has a baited hook attached to it.
Fishing rods vary from 4 feet (for children) to 16 feet, with the average being 6 feet long. Rod length is chosen based on: the species of fish you target and the environment you will fish at.
Landscape
If your fishing hole is beside trees with overhead branches, you'll need a short, flexible rod. Flexibility -- the amount the rod can bend before breaking -- is determined by the diameter of the pole. Light rods are thin and flexible, while stronger rods are thicker and more rigid.
For open terrain, flexible, thin rods that are 10 to 12 feet long are good, unless it is too windy.
Fresh Water Or Salt Water?
Freshwater fishing occurs in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, while saltwater fishing is done in oceans and along the coast. Choose a rod appropriate to the environment.
Plan For Species Of Fish
Short, strong rods are best for landing game fish. Stronger and thicker rods should be used for large, aggressive fish. Such fish could break a lighter pole.
Select Rod By Material
Common types of fishing rods include bamboo, fiberglass and graphite.
Bamboo rods can be a basic, inexpensive pole with a line attached, to very expensive handcrafted rods that are used for fly-fishing. Bamboo rods run from $5 up to hundreds of dollars for handcrafted fly fishing rods. If you are not planning to do fly-fishing, fiberglass or graphite rods are best.
Fiberglass rods are good for beginners and kids and they're reasonably priced. They come in many lengths, flexibility characteristics, and require very little maintenance.
Many experienced anglers prefer graphite rods, because they are very lightweight and extremely strong.
A Fitting Rod
Your goal should be to find a rod that fits your arm and is comfortable. If you have trouble choosing, ask someone with experience to go along or just ask the staff at a fishing store. A few pointers will quickly get you on your way -- to a world of fun.

Water Filters - Part I
Water filters. Pretty simple concept, right? Turn on your tap, let the dirty water run through the filter and into your glass goes some nice clean contaminant free water. And in theory it is a simple process. Unfortunately picking a water filter is not so simple as their are many different ways to filter your water and many different types of filters to filter your water with. So which ones are best? The answer to that question is probably eternally elusive but at least in this article we're going to review some of the different types of filters that there are so you can make an informed decision.
Probably the most common water filters are charcoal. The charcoal is actually gotten from coconut husk. The charcoal absorbs the impurities out of the water. Charcoal water filters make up about 95% of all the water filters in use. The reason is because they are simple to install, relatively cheap and remove most of the toxins found in the water. An average charcoal filter will last between 6 and 9 months before it has to be replaced. Some charcoal filters are enhanced by the use of silver which gives you extra antibacterial protection. Charcoal filters are probably the best buy for the money.
Not quite as common are what are called reverse osmosis water filters. These filters use a fine membrane to filter the water through an osmotic process. These filters, unlike charcoal filters, take everything out of the water, leaving them totally pure. These filters are installed under your sink and require a serviceman to come out every few months to install a new membrane. There is some debate as to how beneficial these filters really are since they also take all the good minerals out of the water as well.
Another type of water filter is the distiller water filter. These filters use electricity to heat the water to its boiling point. The impurities are left in the boiling container and then the purified condensed water drains back into a clean container. These filters require an enormous amount of power and don't give an immediate supply because the boiling process must be completed first. There are reports that claim that distilled water is not good to drink long term because it actually takes nutrients from your body because of the unnaturalness of the water.
Then there are ionized water filters. Ionized water is water that has been electronically altered by being run over by positive and negative electrodes. The water then becomes ionized by separating the water and the minerals in it into alkaline and acidic water. You end up with 70% alkaline water and 30% acidic water. Both waters have excellent properties. The alkaline ionized water is used for drinking and is a great antitoxin for the body. Acidic ionized water is used primarily for bathing and is supposed to be very good for killing bacteria.
In our next article we'll go over some additional types of water filter and treatment systems.

Super Bowl 40: Decided in the Trenches
Sundays Super Bowl is likely to be won by the team with the most rushing yardage. Winning the battle of the line of scrimmage is as basic it gets, but its also a tried and true method for victory. Last season the Patriots won the rushing battle 112-45 in their 24-21 win over the Eagles. The year before, the Pats outrushed Carolina 127-92 on their way to the title. Even in their stunning upset of the Rams five years ago, the Patriots won the rushing battle against Marshall Faulk and their strong St. Louis offensive line, 133-90.
This Super Bowl is so interesting because both teams love to run the football behind mammoth offensive lines and bruising running backs like Jerome Bettis and rushing champ Shaun Alexander. Both coaches, too, Mike Holmgren and Bill Cowher, have a propensity to run the football and take away the opponents running game. Both offensive lines are solid.
Seattle was third in the NFL averaging 153 yards rushing per game, while Pittsburgh was fifth averaging 139 yards per game. In the all important yards per carry, Seattle averaged 4.7 yards (second) while the Steelers averaged 4 yards per pop (12th).
One aspect of the game that could be key is that Seattle has faced only one good team all season (Dallas) that ran a 3-4 defense. So does Pittsburgh. In that game against the Cowboys, Shaun Alexander had his worst game of the season with 61 yards rushing on 21 carries. Seattle needed a late miracle in the final minute, and a timely Drew Bledsoe turnover, to win that game 13-10. You can bet the Seahawks have watched game film of that one again to try and figure out what they did wrong and what adjustments they need to make. Pittsburghs run-stuffers and quick, aggressive linebackers are as good as any in the league, and better than the Cowboys!
The Cowboys continually controlled the line of scrimmage by putting as many as nine defenders within 4 yards of the ball, even on passing downs. The Seattle offense, averaging 407 yards coming in to that game, finished with 289. In addition, QB Matt Hasselbeck was 23-of-42 for 224 yards, with one TD and two interceptions. Hell likely have to put up better numbers than that Sunday if Seattle is going to win a championship. Notice that Dallas RB Marion Barber ran for 95 yards on 22 carries in Julius Jones' place. The Steelers would love to repeat that kind of production with Jerome Bettis or Willie Anderson.
One final thought is the explosive war or words thats been going on. Seattle TE Jerramy Stevens took a foolish shot at Bettis, after which Pittsburgh LB Joey Porter retorted, I think we can go out there and beat them. Porter also added, "I've got my first taste of blood, and now I'm thirsty for more. Does anyone smell FIREWORKS? Said Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren when asked about the rhetoric between the two players, "You won't hear Jerramy say any more about it the rest of the week. Which means he told Stevens to keep his yap shut! Enjoy the game, and remember that the dog has covered 4 straight Super Bowls, with three of the last four decided by a field goal.

How To Select a Table Lamp or Floor Lamp
A "how to" on lamp selection or home decorating should first address the fact that individuals may have strong personal tastes or preferences. After 25 years of close personal relationships with designers, decorators, store buyers and most importantly the retail customer, we have evolved a unique perspective on how to select a lamp.
I remember an interesting event that occurred in 1979 while attending the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina. A designer came into our showroom where we were exhibiting our lamps, pictures, other accessories and furniture. She carried with her a catalog page from one of the country's largest retailers at that time. On this page was a listing in tabular form, showing the "exact" shade size to order if your lamp was a particular height. Imagine that in today's market ! Obviously it would not work at all.
We will not be quite that specific but instead offer you some guidelines that will give you confidence in selecting a lamp for any area of your home or office. We also consult with hotels, motels, casinos, nursing homes, prisons and other institutions. These situations have unique considerations that must be addressed individually but many of the same principles apply.
Before you go looking for a lamp, ponder some questions. You may be surprised how much this pondering will help. A journalistic approach will help you to formulate in your own mind just how to select a lamp.
Who - What - Where - When - Why and How
Who are you? Are your tastes and your current home decor formal, casual, country, contemporary, etc. Your living area is a reflection of who you are and what you like. So, who are you? Do you just want to do something on a whim (in the way of home decor), then perhaps you are not so concerned with what your current theme is about. Otherwise you will want your new lamp to "fit in" with what you already have and like in your home.
What is the main purpose, the primary use for the lamp you are considering: reading, writing, work project, area lighting, accent lighting, an object of art, a beautiful specimen lamp, just something pretty that will light up an area? What colors are you using in the room where you are putting your new lamp? Remember, you are just pondering for the moment. For now simply hold these considerations in your own mind and give them some thought.
What room is the lamp going to be placed: living room, den, bedroom, dining room, foyer, kitchen, bathroom, game room, entertainment room, etc?
Where exactly is the lamp to be used: a table, a desk, night stand, counter top, mantel, book case, chest, dresser, sideboard, armoire, etc?
When will you typically be using the lamp: morning, noon, afternoon, bedtime, after supper, late night? Will others be in the room with you when you are using the lamp? Will the light from the lamp affect others in the room?
Now that you have pondered the above ideas, let us look at some specifics especially sizes. Home decor items are very important as they relate to each other in the same room. How big is the table, counter, shelf, etc. where the lamp will sit ? A large lamp on a small table or small area will appear overpowering. A small lamp by itself on a large table or in a large area will appear lost.
How large is the room where the lamp is to be used? A tiny lamp left exposed in a huge room will appear lost and vice versa. How high are the ceilings? Many medium to large homes today have 17' or taller ceilings in the great room. Generally a 30" tall (or above) end table lamp is right at home in a room this size. Of course a lamp sitting on the bookcase in this same room may only be 12-15" tall. The mantel lamp in this same room may be 25-35" tall. Think of relativity (remember Einstein).
The construction material of your new lamp can be extremely important. The most durable materials are cast metals, stone, porcelains, crystals, glass and wood. All of the antique heirloom lamps that we see and work with today are made from these materials and they very handsomely stand the test of time. Resin or poly resin and hydrocal are not recommended for any lamp that you wish to keep as these materials nearly self destruct.
Still pondering ? You should already be well on your way to fine tuning what you need. If you find that you still need help, free consultation is available from some home dcor manufacturers via the internet.
